From my point of view, the "smiley faces" appear when the characters used in a document are not the same ISO that is used by a printer. The characters can't be printed because the printer doesn't know how or doesn't have support (there might be printer drivers' problems as well). You should replace those characters with normal characters. Go to Start > Run > charmap. Locate the character for the font used in your documents and then replace it as necessary.
